Three Years' of Repatriation Blog

I started this blog three years ago. Its purpose was to separate the discussions of pre-1970 repatriation issues from the discussion on the main blog of the ongoing despoliation of sites by antiquity collectors. I sensed that the mixing of the two separate (in my opinion) issues was clouding the debate, and it is my suspicion that this was being deliberately done. So I wanted to explore it separately. In contrast to the main (PACHI) blog, I never intended this blog to present any particular case or be a systematic overview of the subject, these are mostly just loose jottings. I did however try to record here the more newsworthy topics that were being discussed as they came up. I was curious how it breaks down by topic: Parthenon 21 Turkey 14 (mostly in 2012) 'American museums' 9 Human remains 8 (New Zealand 5, Ainu 1, Namibia 1) African art 9 Egypt 8 (2011 and 2012 only) Benin/Nigeria 7 (Ghana 1) Cambodia 7 China 5  Korea 3 Sri Lanka 3 (about one object though) Russia 3 Italy 3

93.7 The Beat Houston replaces 93.7 The Arrow KKRW

Classic Rocker 93.7 The Arrow KKRW is dead, The Beat takes over as Houston's newest urban station So instead of Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy on 93.7, from now on you will probably hear Holy Grail by Jay-Z featuring Justin Timberlake. Just whatever you do, don't let Timberlake get near Reliant Stadium and Janet Jackson again! That's because after 20 years, 93.7 The Arrow KKRW has flipped

EARLY MORNING MUSINGS

In the past week or more, a number of you have posted interesting and suggestive comments on this blog, to which I have not yet responded.   I hope to do so before I leave for Paris on January 6th.   This morning during my walk [40 degrees -- quite comfortable], I turned over in my mind what I might say.   For some reason, I found myself recalling what I had written in the first volume of my Autobiography about my fruitful engagement with the Critique of Pure Reason .   It occurred to me that I had neglected to talk about one of the most important motivating convictions of that effort, and though it is very far indeed from any of your comments, I shall take a few moments to return to that pivotal moment in my intellectual development and try to capture on paper my thoughts from the late Fall months of 1959, when I was preparing the notes that served first as the basis of my lectures in Philosophy 130 at Harvard and then as the skeleton of my first book, Kant's Theory of Mental Ac

Happy New Year: Best of 2013

2013 has been such an incredible year. I never dreamed that a little blog which I started five years ago would allow me the opportunity to travel the world and meet so many amazing and inspiring people. I am truly thankful for everyone who visits  and comments regularly. Your encouragement and support are the driving force behind a growing movement and shift in how we view the aging process. Here are some of my favorite photos from 2013. Thanks so much for all of your continued support and have a happy, healthy, and safe New Year!!!!!

Page o' coordination: bass drum variation in 6/8

Image
Are you getting to the point that you can work these up in a few days, and then retire them, yet? We've done a big pile of these POC s, but they cover a fairly narrow range of difficulty, and once you've sort of mastered one, the remainder should come quickly. Today's YAASE ( Yet Another Afro 6/8 ) is at the harder end of the spectrum, somewhat, with a bass drum variation which I noticed creeping into my playing during the tour. I wrote this to get a little better command over it, and introduce the possibility of some different things happening with the left hand with it: Do the tom moves , please. I generally play them a few times with the left hand playing rim clicks on the snare, then do the moves, playing rim clicks on the notes landing on the snare drum. Add accents with the left hand wherever you are able— I just listen to the recording and let them happen naturally. Get the pdf Here's the track I've been playing along with:

93.7 The Arrow KKRW stunting for format flip

Bye, bye 93.7 The Arrow KKRW and 2013 UPDATE 93.7 The Beat Houston replaces 93.7 The Arrow KKRW Fans of 93.7 The Arrow KKRW will have a sad end to 2013 as the 20 year radio station is currently flipping formats. How do I know? The classic rocker is playing Miley Cyrus as I am writing this. It has had announcements starting at 10am saying change is coming at noon today. [LISTEN LIVE]

The 5 most-read West End Dumplings posts of 2013

Image
How the Winnipeg Tribune saw the end of 1913 Here are my 5 most-read posts of 2013, according to Google Analytics. Surprisingly, only 3 of my top 20 were written in 2013. The rest were earlier series on topics that made the news in 2013.  To be fair to my 2013 work, the blog's title page was the most popular entry point, by a 10:1 margin. That, of course, always contained 2013 material. Thanks to all who checked out my blog. There's plenty more to come next year ! 1. Safeway in Winnipeg - Back in 2010 I did a series on the history of Safeway in Winnipeg. When the U.S. grocery giant came to Canada in 1929, this was their home base. The company has been in the news a couple of times this thanks to their takeover by Sobeys . 2. Winnipeg Stadium's History - Despite the fact that it was ready to fall down around the ears of the football team at any second, the stadium managed to survive another year and reach the ripe old age of 59. The first post in this series, the 1953

"Paraplegic" stayed outside the system for over 10 years

A paraplegic has been jailed after failing to pay almost £75,000 in tax and £18,000 in interest - after he stockpiled more than £310,000 in cash in a bedroom drawer (a reader notes). Peter Bell, 66, of Dalefields, Delph, admitted the fraudulent evasion of income tax, concealing criminal property and fraud. A police search in July 2012 found £311,940 hidden in Bell's bedroom. He had worked as a builder from the age of 16 and was regularly paid cash in hand. In 1999 he declared himself a paraplegic after an accident - but was able to return to work in 2001 and failed to notify the authorities of a change in circumstance. On his 65th birthday he put himself forward for pension credit and claimed he did not have savings or investments worth more than £10,000. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) calculated that Bell should have paid £74,184.20 and £18,000 interest in income tax over a ten year period. He was also paid more than £42,000 in benefits . Bell was sentenced to 15 months in prison

What Did Your Word-of-the-Year Teach You?

by Christine Kane This is the time of year when I get emails and Facebook notes from people who downloaded my Word of the Year Discovery Tool last year at this time.  They’re writing to share the breakthroughs that happened to them as they let a single word “guide” them throughout the past 365 days. This practice of choosing a word-of-the-year (rather than making resolutions) is something I

I've seen this going around blogland and I'm a badwagoner (yea, that's not a word, oh well) so without further ado (did you know that's actually the correct way to spell ado in this usage? Blew my mind when I found out), here are my 5 favorite posts of 2013: Five . John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt . Yea, sorry, I sing Halloween songs inappropriately and I want to wear impossible costumes. Four . Kenny Angel . I bet your Christmas Angel doesn't have a Ken head nor wear a baseball hat. Three . It's Okay, It's Just a Fart . Yea, I thought a fart was a bomb, which one of you hasn't thought that before? Two . Ethan Allen, Can I Get a Discount ? No seriously, we're related and my Grandmom wants a discount on some furniture. One . But the Worst Thing I Ever Done ... Pretty much a countdown of my most embarrassing moments, except for the time my rape alarm went off at McDonalds. This was hard to do and I left out so many other posts I really like, but I jus

Failure of healing of cuff repair and its effect on the clinical outcome

There is substantial evidence that many cuff repair surgeries fail to achieve durable reattachment of the tendon to bone. Interestingly many of the shoulders having failed cuff repairs are improved after surgery making us wonder if a smooth and move surgery might have achieved a similar result in these cases without putting the patient through the additional risk, cost and period of inactivity associated with a cuff repair attempt. Here are some of the articles of interest. Failure "in continuity" - Rotator cuff papers at the 2011 closed meeting of the ASES - do cuff repairs work? Failure "in continuity" - rotator cuff tears - articles in the December 2011 Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery A  high percentage of cuff tears are asymptomatic. Christmas was amazing this year.  I really think this whole Santa stuff is magical.  I love the thrill of leaving milk and cookies out and waiting to see if Santa bring exactly what you wanted.  We had a great year and a great time celebrating. Christmas Eve we went to church with Jason's mom and then over to our house for dinner and round one of presents. Each kid got a lego set,  Gavin got his own recliner,  Reegan's favorite present - princesses that have multiple outfits to change them into.  Then we left milk and cookies and off to bed. The kids were good this year and got exactly what they asked for.  Reegan a sparkly wagon for her baby dolls and Gavin sports balls.  They each also got a book of bedtime stories and a large stuffed animal.  Christmas morning, their reactions didn't disappoint.  Every present that she opened, Reegan said "its exactly what I wanted".  So cute, this camera was a hit, she took 160 pictures in the first 2 days.  My parents house
